F. Barbier

Albert system clarinet in Bb, low pitch

F. Barbier Albert system clarinet

Florentin Barbier was an instrument maker for woodwinds in France from approx. 1869-1910. He had a good reputation, and I believe because of that, his company was taken over by Selmer in the early 1900s.

Even under Selmer’s ownership, the trade mark F. Barbier was retained.
Apparently, Selmer was very proud of their “little sister” and did extremely good publicity for F. Barbier. This is made clear in Selmer’s catalogue from 1927 (photos below):

This clarinet matches No. 5X in the first photo.

The clarinet has been completely refurbished: New leather pads, cork, keys optimized and lubricated.

This instrument is made grenadilla wood and measures 60,2 cm from top of barrel to bottom of bell. The bore is 14,65 mm and the total weight is 631 grams.

Important:

I would ask you to “warm up / break in” the clarinet gently. Play for about half an hour every day for at least a month. Not anymore. The wood needs to be reminded that it is actually a clarinet and needs to get used to changes in humidity again.

Please note that although it looks pretty in the photos, it is not a new clarinet. both wood and keys show signs of wear.
