Oehler system clarinet in Bb, low pitch
Made by Fritz Schüller, Markneukirchen, Germany.
Markneukirchen was an epicenter for music instrument factories/workshops in the beginning of last century. Literally hundreds of manufactorers and suppliers.
Fritz Schüller had his business there from 1909-68.
The Öhler system clarinet is similar to the Albert system. Both are “German systems”, however Oehler took a more advanced path in development. Fingerings are the same, but Ohler has more keys. Some to compensate for intonation, some to ease the difficult fingerings of the Albert.
They have significant shorter barrels. This one comes with two: 52 and 55 mm. The usual length for both Albert and Boehm would be 64-68mm. However, the total length of the clarinet is 60 cm, which is normal for all Bb clarinets.
The mouthpieces are special. Two original wooden ones is with this Schüller. Professional Oehler players uses extremely hard reeds- not attached with a liguature as we’re used to, but with a string.
The clarinet has been completely refurbished: New leather pads, cork, keys optimized and lubricated.
This instrument is made grenadilla wood and measures 59,7 cm from top of barrel to bottom of bell. The bore is 14,75 mm and the total weight is 731 grams.
The serial number is 7271.
Important:
I would ask you to “warm up / break in” the clarinet gently. Play for about half an hour every day for at least a month. Not anymore. The wood needs to be reminded that it is actually a clarinet and needs to get used to changes in humidity again.
Please note that although it looks pretty in the photos, it is not a new clarinet. both wood and keys show signs of wear.
