Henri Selmer Paris B♭ Albert System Clarinet (1946)
PRESENTATION OF THE CLARINET
A rare and highly sought-after original Henri Selmer Paris Albert system clarinet from 1946 (serial number M8940) in B♭ Low Pitch (A=440 Hz). As Selmer phased out standard production of Albert system clarinets around 1946–1947, this instrument is historically one of the very last of its kind to leave the factory in Paris. The instrument features a 5-ring keywork configuration, a straight register key, and the legendary “3-pads-in-a-row” layout on the lower joint, making it exceptionally desirable among trad-jazz and New Orleans players. As a subtle craftsmanship detail, three of the keys (low C#, F#, and E) feature a German-inspired design; however, the clarinet is fundamentally a classic French Selmer setup with its renowned warm tone and powerful projection. Ideal for trad-jazz, Klezmer, Balkan, and folk music.
CONDITION REPORT AND REPAIRS
The clarinet is in top mechanical condition. Shortly before 2020, the instrument was repadded with high-quality Pisoni leather pads. In 2020, the upper joint underwent a comprehensive and professional crack repair by woodwind specialists Winklers Woodwind in Wisconsin, USA, including four new tonehole bushings and structural reinforcement with carbon fiber pins. The repair leaves the upper joint structurally rock-solid and completely airtight, while remaining virtually invisible. The clarinet has not been played since the repair (unplayed for approx. 5–6 years), meaning the Pisoni leather pads are in virtually brand-new condition, sealing tightly with a fast and precise response throughout all registers.
